Chelation

IV Chelation is most often used to remove excesses of toxic heavy metals from the body. The most common examples are lead, mercury, cadmium, and aluminum. Chelation derives from a root word meaning “claw,” referring to “grabbing” these heavy metals and escorting them out of the body. There are two commonly used chelators in clinical practice, EDTA and DMPS. Some others are available for unique cases.

People frequently ask, “Where would I have gotten an overload of toxic metals in my body?” My answer to that question is another question:
“Do you eat the food, do you breathe the air and do you drink the water? Good, you’ve got exposure.”
Detoxification of metals is partially determined by genetics, and partially by diet and lifestyle habits. We frequently observe that intoxication with heavy metals contributes to the health complaints that bring people to see us.

EDTA is the FDA approved agent for treatment of lead poisoning and is also an excellent agent for removal of cadmium, uranium, thorium, barium, antimony and many other metals. It has an excellent safety profile and a long history of use for lead toxicity. It is typically well- tolerated provided that provisions for replacement of essential minerals is made.
DMPS is less commonly used. It is excellent for removal of mercury and tin.

Heavy metals adversely affect many organ systems and are associated with numerous disease processes including but not limited to:

  • Neurotoxicity which may manifest as “brain fog”, changes in cognition and IQ as well as neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's
  • Heavy metals generate free radicals which damage lipids, proteins and DNA and can lead to cancers.
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Immune suppression
  • High blood pressure
  • Hormone disruption including thyroid and blood sugar
  • Mood disorders including depression, agitation, anxiety
  • Tremors
  • Liver damage
  • Kidney damage

A Doctors Data, Genova, or Vibrant urine test for heavy metals is typically required before IV Chelation is prescribed. We also require a kidney function test to ensure safety.
