Iron is required for red blood cell formation, hundreds of enzymatic reactions in the body and energy production in the mitochondria. Insufficient iron results in anemia and decreased delivery of oxygen to the tissues, an undesirable state of affairs.
Symptoms of iron deficient anemia:
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath on exertion
- Exercise intolerance
- Falling hair
- Rapid heart rate
- Heart palpitations
- Restless legs.
